Ever wonder how specialty book covers are made?

Samples of foils, embossing, and bespoke jacket covers

On a beautiful Wednesday in August, the Victory Vision Publishing team toured a print shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to learn more about how we can make your vision a reality—even when your vision is outside the box.

Oddly-shaped children’s books in sizes that Amazon won’t produce are a possibility, as well as journals or hardcover books with delightful varieties of foil embossing—again, not something an author can set up from their Kindle Direct Publishing page.

The local printer's bespoke samples

What use cases do you have for some kind of specialty printing? Our tour guide Michael showed us a really fancy cover they did for a well-known fantasy author. I don’t read a lot of fantasy but I recognized the name immediately. “We printed 150,000 of these for a Kickstarter release,” he said, “and they charged $200 per copy.” Most authors would be well-advised to make a specialty print run between 100 and 1000 copies, if they are going to do it at all.

We are excited to add this as a service to our production packages to the author envisioning truly bespoke covers!

The bottom line is that publishing through and selling only on Amazon severely limits your creativity and your potential to make money on your book, while taking advantage of ways to make your project truly special can create fans for life.

Even self-publishing authors can have incredible products to sell and make you stand out above the crowd, whether you’re going to fairs and book festivals, speaking to audiences and leading workshops, or selling specialty products only available through your website. Here are a few ideas to spark your imagination.

  • Branded, gold-embossed journal with placeholder ribbon.
  • Children’s book with odd dimensions like 6” high by 12” wide that match the size of drawings you did.
  • Spiral-bound cookbooks or sheet music.
  • Card deck with suggested activities or games to go along with your book.
  • Hardcover copies of your novel with embossed foil on the dust jacket.
  • Limited-edition versions of what’s available to anyone on Amazon for exclusive release.
  • Better print quality than you get from the big players.
